Abstract

Organic waste management at the village level remains a significant challenge, as most waste is disposed of in landfills without productive utilization. This condition is also observed at Batu Bola landfill in Simatohir Village, where organic waste has not been optimally managed and has not generated economic value for the local community. This community service program aimed to enhance community capacity in managing organic waste through maggot cultivation as a bioconversion agent, while establishing a sustainable village-owned enterprise (BUMDes)-based business unit. The program applied a participatory approach consisting of needs assessment, socialization, technical training, implementation of an organic waste shredding machine, and continuous mentoring and evaluation. The initiative utilized larvae of the Black Soldier Fly, which are capable of rapidly decomposing organic waste and converting it into high-protein biomass (maggot) and organic fertilizer residue. The results indicate a significant improvement in community technical skills related to waste sorting and maggot cultivation. One active business group was established under the coordination of the village-owned enterprise. The implementation successfully reduced organic waste volume by approximately 150 kg per day at Batu Bola landfill. Maggot production reached an average of 20 kg per week, creating potential additional income for the community. Furthermore, the program fostered the development of a village-scale circular economy system integrating waste management, livestock feed production, and agricultural fertilization. In conclusion, the maggot-based organic waste management model proved effective in strengthening community economic independence while improving environmental sustainability at the village level.
